RWE Dea has signed a farm-in agreement with PETRONAS Suriname E&P BV (“PETRONAS Suriname”), acquiring a 40% interest in the licence Block 52 off the coast of Suriname. In doing so, RWE Dea will secure entry into the South American country with proven hydrocarbon potential.

At the Garzweiler open-cast mine, RWE is planting a total of 160,000 new energy plants on two recultivation areas. Silphium perfoliatum is to be tested as an alternative raw material for the generation of biogas. The aim is to use the plants at RWE’s biogas power stations in Neurath and in future also in Bergheim-Paffendorf and to compare the gas yield and biogas quality with those of other energy plants.

The British Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change has issued approval for the construction of the Galloper offshore wind farm off the south east coast of England. The wind farm has been developed in a joint venture between RWE Innogy and the British electric utility Scottish and Southern Energy plc (SSE). It will have an installed capacity of 504 megawatts. The project is located some 27 kilometres off the coast of the English county of Suffolk.

In advance of the European Council, eight large European energy companies have made an appeal to leading European politicians, aiming to draw the attention of heads of state and government towards the challenges the energy market is facing. The signatories were the CEOs of Enel, Eni, Eon, GasNatural Fenosa, GasTerra, GDF Suez, Iberdrola und RWE.

The first of a total of 160 wind turbines was successfully installed at the offshore wind farm Gwynt y Môr (Welsh for “wind of the sea”). The wind turbine from Siemens was installed on a monopile foundation approximately twelve kilometres off the coast of North Wales.

RWE Dea AG won the Silver Award at this year’s WorldMediaFestival for the documentary “North Sea Gold”. The film realised by Steinlein & Partner Filmproduktion last year, documents life and work on Germany’s only oil drilling and production platform Mittelplate located at the southern edge of Schleswig-Holstein’s Wadden Sea tidelands.

The RWE Foundation has been committed to young people for 15 years. It was established under the name “RWE Jugendstiftung” (RWE Youth Foundation) at the time of RWE’s centenary in 1998, and was registered on 30 April that year. The original focus was on promoting social projects that offered opportunities and prospects for disadvantaged children and young people. Its principal tasks involved helping people to help themselves and to make a start in their careers.
