For the thirteenth time in succession, the RWE Group has qualified for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). The SAM Group reviews each company’s sustainability management every year and decides on the basis of this analysis whether or not it should remain in the indexes.
For the period 2011/12, the RWE Group was chosen to be a member of both the worldwide “Dow Jones Sustainability World Index” and the European “Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index.” The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes are compiled and published by Dow Jones Indexes in cooperation with the SAM Group.
Peter Terium, Deputy Chairman of the RWE Executive Board and in charge of corporate responsibility in the Group: “It is one of our corporate strategic objectives to become more sustainable. To achieve this we are expanding renewables, driving the development of innovative and intelligent solutions and products as well as offering an attractive and safe work place for our employees. We also focus on occupational health and safety and environmental protection at our suppliers’ companies.” RWE is one of the few German companies to have been listed every year without exception since the launch of the Sustainability Index in 1999. “The fact that we have been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes rewards our high standards, especially in risk management and occupational health and safety. We are moving full steam ahead on climate protection and power plant efficiency. The good grade we received for our climate protection strategy proves that we are on the right path here”, said Terium.
Each company’s inclusion in the index is reviewed every year and because the leading companies have been inching closer and closer together in recent years, maintaining a position at the top is becoming increasingly difficult.
The Utilities group reads like a who’s who of the world’s largest listed suppliers of electricity, gas and water. The indexes can also be read as a list of the best in class. Only 13 utilities worldwide are listed in DJSI World 2011/12 – against 19 utilties in 2010. The economical, ecological and social dimensions rated include the action taken on climate protection as well as corporate governance and risk management.
The DJSI indexes are widely regarded as the world’s most important set of indexes for sustainable corporate governance and award the best in class in each category.
RWE was awarded the following points in the economic, ecological and social dimensions and in the overall ranking:
