Moerdijk 2 CCGT plant, Netherlands
In Moerdijk, a small town located 50 kilometres south of Rotterdam, RWE Technology is building a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plant (CCGT) on behalf of Essent. Moerdijk 2 will have a capacity of 430 MW and is being built in the direct vicinity of the 330 MW cogeneration power plant Moerdijk 1, likewise operated by Essent. The new CCGT power station will have an efficiency rate of at least 58 per cent. Its special design will enable highly flexible operations. There are some technical challenges to master in building the plant. For example, the ground at the site is so soft that 1,200 piles have had to be driven 40 metres into the earth to provide a secure foundation for the power station.
Construction start: 2008
