RWE global no. 1 for the first time in sustainable management

  • Only German utility in Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 1999
  • In the top group for the sixth time

The RWE Group, Essen, will be the global number one in sustainable management for the first time among electricity utilities in 2005. This is the result of the current ranking lists of the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for 2005. In the DJSI "World", the Group ranks top in the "Electric Utilities" group, while it is ranked again among the leaders in the DJSI "STOXX" as in 2004. RWE has thus improved its very good position already held the year before. RWE is the only German utility company represented continuously in the DJSI Indices since the first ranking in 1999. In recent years, the Group has committed itself strongly to expanding and implementing a Group-wide sustainability strategy under the auspices of the Group Executive Board. Cornerstones are milestone projects and transparent reporting which has been developed further with the first sustainability report published this year.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices are established and published by SAM Indexes GmbH, Zurich, a cooperation of Dow Jones and SAM. The DJSI World comprises approx. 300 companies worldwide which have qualified among some 2,500 companies and are regarded as leaders in terms of sustainable corporate policy in their industry. The European benchmark DJSI STOXX comprises 167 companies out of a total of about 600 listed enterprises. The DJSI Indices are regarded as the most important index group worldwide for sustainable management with the highest degree of dissemination. Just the funds licensed according to the DJSI criteria account for a volume of nearly € 3 billion.
