RWE Innogy expands its wind power portfolio in Poland

• Takeover of the Gamesa wind farm at Krzecin
  
• Total installed capacity in Poland expanded to 122 megawatts
  
• Expansion to 300 megawatts planned by 2015

RWE Innogy has commenced operation of the Krzecin onshore wind farm (14 megawatts) in Poland. The wind farm is situated in the district of Western-Pomerania and was developed and constructed by the company Gamesa. The commissioning of this wind farm means that RWE Innogy will be expanding its Polish wind energy portfolio to an installed capacity of 122 megawatts.

“Onshore wind power makes a significant contribution to the expansion of renewable energies in Poland, not least as a result of the excellent wind power locations and the attractive business environment”, explains Dr. Hans Bünting, CEO at RWE Innogy. “We also want to invest in the expansion of wind energy in Poland, operating some 300 megawatts of capacity by 2015. Krzecin will take us a big step forward in helping us to achieve this expansion target.”

Onshore wind farm Krzecin

The Krzecin wind farm comprises seven Gamesa G90-2.0 MW wind turbines. These generate two megawatts of electricity each and have a hub height of 100 metres with a rotor diameter of 90 metres. Each year, these turbines can produce some 30,000 megawatt-hours of electricity. This is sufficient to power the equivalent of over 15,000 households in Poland and avoid the emission of some 30,000 tonnes of CO₂. The neighbouring RWE Innogy wind farm at Tychowo has a total installed capacity of some 35 megawatts and has been supplying electricity to the grid since the end of 2010.

RWE Innogy now operates a total of four onshore wind farms in Poland: Since 2009 the Suwalki wind farm has been feeding over 41 megawatts into the grid, followed by Tychowo (35 megawatts) and Piecki (32 megawatts). Furthermore, the Nowy Staw wind farm with a capacity of 39 megawatts is now also under construction. Commissioning is planned for the beginning of 2013.
