Strategic Aims

RWE Supply & Trading unites RWE Trading’s successful activities on the wholesale markets with the long-term gas procurement, structuring and optimisation business of RWE Gas Midstream.

The strategy of RWE Supply & Trading is however more than just the sum of the successful strategies of its founding companies:

This merger produces an even stronger company with the following goals:

  1. We will strengthen our position as the leading European energy trader.
  2. We will continue to actively drive forward the positive development of the European wholesale energy markets, a development which is of great importance for the consumers and for the economy as a whole. By helping to build liquid markets, we play our part in creating transparent, competition-based price signals for consumers, producers and investors.

  3. We will continue to be a trustworthy partner in all of the markets in which we are active. The number of these markets will continue to grow both in terms of the products as well as its geographic scope.

  4. We will play an important role in the economic success of the RWE Group by serving our affiliated companies as interface to the wholesale commodities and procurement markets across the entire value chain.

  5. We will be the leading risk and portfolio manager: we will use the newest and best possibilities to enhance the value of  physical assets as well as long-term contracts and contractual rights. We will apply our extensive knowledge and the infrastructure used for our permanent presence on the proprietary wholesale trading markets.

  6. Through our global trading activities we have achieved a leading position as wholesale traders of coal, both in physical as well as in derivative products. We will continue to expand our position in the global coal markets.
  7. We will continue to grow in the gas markets and we will catch up with the leading gas companies in Europe: by 2012 our gas supply portfolio will have reached a volume of around 60 billion cubic metres per annum.

  8. Together with our upstream sister company RWE Dea, we will double our gas procurement activities form own sources in the next five years. We will increase our direct imports from natural gas producing countries. Through these activities we will make an active contribution to the security of the European gas import portfolio for the benefit of the European energy consumer.

  9. As the 6th partner in the Nabucco Pipeline Project, we will actively drive forward the construction of this pipeline which is of highest importance for the diversity and energy supply security in Europe.

  10. Through our participation in Excelerate Energy we have opened up Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a new procurement possibility for the RWE Group and Europe as a whole. This is especially true thanks to the  special on board  re-gasification technology of the Excelerate vessels, with which we have opened up access to all important LNG procurement and sales areas.

  11. With the growth of our long-term portfolio for gas storage and transportation rights we are creating the prerequisites to flexibly react to increasing regional and temporal price differences, to fulfil the needs of our clients and, through the application of our economic optimisation skills, to create added value for our company.
