As a large power provider we are meeting the challenge of supplying electricity and natural gas reliably and at competitive prices both today and in the long term. With regard to electricity generation, for instance, we are banking on a balanced, diverse generation portfolio consisting of coal, nuclear energy, natural gas and renewables. Fossil energy sources will remain a central pillar for our energy supply in the long run. Thus, it is of vital importance that we ensure the supply with raw materials and primary energy carriers such as coal and gas in the future as well.
For instance, RWE is supplied with lignite from its own opencast mines. The Rhenish lignite mining area has the largest single lignite deposit in Europe. RWE produces just under 100 million tons of lignite – the most important domestic energy carrier. In doing so, we strive to work as efficiently and with as little impact on the environment as possible.
With respect to the production of natural gas and oil our research and development activities are focused on ensuring our high success rate in well drilling. In addition, we are continuously working on improving the efficiency of the production process.
