Hydropower - an energy evergreen
Hydropower is a classic renewable energy source. For more than a hundred years, RWE has been producing electricity using this technology in an economically viable way without CO2 emissions. In Germany and Western Europe, the potentials are largely exhaused. Any further increase in production comes up against economic, approval-law and ecological limits. Nevertheless, we explore every opportunity. We see particularly promising growth potential primarily in Southeastern Europe as well as in Turkey. We are determined to harness these opportunities.
The modernisation of existing power stations and the improvement of their efficiency also involve considerable opportunities for growth. Since power plants are on stream for several decades, it is worthwhile overhauling older plants as well, and retaining or boosting their output by deploying innovative technology.
RWE's experts are improving plant components, raising the output of hydraulic and electrical machines or refining the coordinated control of several riverside power plants. Besides addressing the technical requirements, we also be taken equal account of ecological aspects, e.g. the eel-protection initiative on the Moselle.
