It is a need-to-know topic when power consumption becomes a talking point – much as happened with the cockpit in the car years ago. Normality is the key to success. For it is only when we are aware of our energy consumption that energy efficiency can really take off.

Innovative Smart Meter Pilot Project: Mülheim's Into Metering – What About You?

From July 2008 until mid 2012, RWE is equipping every household connected to Mülheim an der Ruhr's power grid with modern, digital Smart Meter electricity meters in the nationwide biggest pilot project. The merit of this new meter generation: it provides customers with more comprehensive and updated data about their power use. This opens up for the citizens of Mülheim completely new ways of saving electricity. Another plus: switching over is free of charge for customers, being simply a matter of replacing the old meter.

Meter readings can be queried remotely in future by RWE. This means that filling out pesky meter cards or on-the-spot meter reading by a member of staff are a thing of the past. The query of monthly comsumption data and the procedure for data provision have been finalized with the data protection authority.

For the first time, RWE creates regular transparency for its customers about consumption patterns, showing the monthly consumption values in online customer accounts. This means that our customers can compare their energy use with the previous months and find out in near-real time whether they have used more or less electricity.

In this way, they can monitor their energy-saving measures and take any needed action. How the use of energy-saving light bulbs or switching off the stand-by mode of their electric devices has effected the total consumption, can be determined at a glance by looking at the customer account.
