Joschka Fischer to support political communication of Nabucco project

  • OMV Gas & Power and RWE Supply & Trading appoint Germany´s former Minister of Foreign Affairs

Energy companies OMV Gas & Power, Vienna, and RWE Supply & Trading, Essen, have appointed Germany’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joschka Fischer (61), as political communications advisor for the development of the Nabucco gas pipeline, a multi-country project.

The two companies announced today that they have entered into a consulting contract, until 2010, with Joschka Fischer. He will use his long-standing experience in foreign affairs and energy pol-icy to gain stronger political support for the project and coordinate corresponding initiatives. He will focus on building relationships and fostering the dialogue with the political decision-makers of the countries that play an important role in the development of the Nabucco project.

Both OMV Gas & Power and RWE Supply & Trading belong to the Nabucco consortium, which is planning to build a gas pipeline connecting Turkey with its neighbouring countries in the East and the South and with Austria. RWE and OMV each hold a one sixth share in the consortium, as all other members, namely Botas (Turkey), Bulgarian Energy Holding (Bulgaria), Transgaz (Romania) and Mol (Hungary).

Stefan Judisch, CEO of RWE Supply & Trading: "Joschka Fischer is a world class expert with an outstanding international reputation. We are delighted that he is contributing his political weight to a project of extraordinary importance for the future of security of energy supply in Europe and for further improvement of competition in the gas market.“

Werner Auli, OMV Executive Board member and responsible for gas and power: "The Nabucco project is progressing very well and has reached a crucial development stage. Nabucco is a multi-country project with great relevance to Europe. This commitment is further evidence of the consistent progress of our collective efforts to promote the development and implementation of the fourth gas corridor.”
