Elements for further growth in RWE's gas business

RWE: active at all levels of the gas market

  • RWE directly supplies gas to approximately 8 million customers in Europe. The Group is the sixth-largest gas company in Europe and is one of the leading players in Germany (no. 3), the Czech Republic (no. 1), Hungary and the United Kingdom (no. 4).
  • As one of Europe’s leading gas companies, RWE has an interest in achieving further growth. Its annual gas procurement currently amounts to approximately 50 billion cubic metres.
  • We thus intend to satisfy the growing needs of our gas customers and power stations, while taking advantage of the growth opportunities on the international gas market, which is enjoying dynamic development.
  • As well as the development of gas sources, principally in Norway and in the Arab/African region by our sister company, RWE Dea, the involvement of RWE in the Nabucco gas pipeline project and our partnership in the US LNG company, Excelerate Energy, play an important role in achieving these growth targets. The fleet, currently comprising of nine LNG vessels, is capable of regasifying liquid natural gas on board and pumping it into the high-pressure gas network on-shore. This can be done either by means of an underwater pipeline, or using infrastructure known as a ‘GasPort’ on-shore. Such LNG facilities are already in operation in the United Kingdom, Kuwait and two plants each in the US and Argentina. A great number of additional plants are currently in the planning stage.
  • RWE has more than 30 years’ experience in pipeline operation and construction (Czech Republic, Germany).
  • RWE is currently improving its pipeline network along the following routes in numerous pipeline projects:
    Czech Republic-Germany-Belgium
North-south axis within the Czech Republic
    Austria-Czech Republic
    Czech Republic-Poland
  • RWE is examining the potential for expansion and further possible locations for construction of underground gas storage facilities in the South East Europe (SEE) region and in most participating transit countries along the Nabucco pipeline.
