Climate Change
One of the main causes of global warming is the emission of large volumes of the gas carbon dioxide resulting from, amongst other things, the generation of electricity by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Every unit of electricity generated from renewable sources displaces a unit that would otherwise have been generated by a fossil fuel power station. Each operating wind turbine, or hydro station, therefore, helps to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and makes an important contribution towards combating climate change.
By reducing our use of fossil fuels for generating electricity, we are also reducing our dependence on imports of coal, oil and gas. This can help the UK reduce its vulnerability to security threats and price increases in foreign markets.
