RWE Algae Project
The world's most progressive algae growing plant for CO2 conversion was commissioned on 6 November 2008 at Niederaussem/Germany. The pilot algae plant is used to examine opportunities for CO2 use. For the planning and implementation of this project, RWE Power has won renowned partners like the Jacobs University, Bremen, the Jülich Research Centre and the Phytolutions company. The goal is to optimize the entire process chain from seaweed production to the final product. In a trial plant measuring some 600 sq m, the seaweed is "fed" with flue gas from the power plant. For the resulting algae biomass, possible uses are to be investigated, e.g. as biofuel.
