„Make use of Diversity – reap success“

Zoom Following this motto, 16 big companies of the region have met in Düsseldorf. It was on the occasion of the Diversity Day, which on initiative of the Charter of Diversity takes place nationwide every year on 3rd June.

The Diversity of employees is becoming increasingly important for companies and especially in an international environment it is a decisive competitive advantage. “Only with an active Diversity Management will the German economy be able to face the shortage of skilled workers and the demographic change” says Aletta Gräfin von Hardenberg, Managing Director of the club Charter of Diversity. “In the light of these challenges it is a appropriate and important sign that these 16 companies are setting, by initiating an exchange and together developing solutions and action plans at this summit.”

What is important to the participating companies: it is not only about fostering women. Diversity refers to diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, to gender, lifestyles, sexual orientation, age and also personality.

The focus of the diversity event was on personal exchange between the participants. In smaller groups they discussed topics such as “Recognising talents – Handling stereotypes”, “Success factors of diverse teams” or “Working worlds of the future” and exchanged experience concerning important questions: How can we as a global company consciously make use of and foster Diversity of employees? How can I as an executive contribute in my own working environment to an increased appreciation and fostering of Diversity as a success factor?

Eva Lepperhoff from RWE Metering GmbH, who participated as a representative of RWE, has taken a lot from this event: “We all tend to think in stereotypes. This stands in the way of supporting Diversity. Diversity is definitely a gain once you have reached it. However, it does require considerable work and effort from each and every one to get there.”

The participating companies Bayer, BP, Deutsche Post DHL, ERGO, E.ON, Ford-Werke, GEA, Henkel, HP, Johnson Controls, LANXESS, METRO GROUP, RWE, ThyssenKrupp, TÜV Rheinland and Vodafone in the Rhein-Ruhr region account for 175,000 employees from up to 100 countries.

„Diversity&Inclusion@RWE – different people, unique solutions“

In addition to this joint event, RWE also fosters the topic of Diversity within the group. On occasion of the nationwide Diversity Day all employees of the Group had been asked to take part in the Diversity Award competition by submitting collages, photographs, sculptures, paintings etc. to illustrate the motto “Diversity & Inclusion in RWE: Diverse people, unique solutions”.
The jury, which consisted of 8 members, was visibly impressed by the diversity and the artistic value of the contributions submitted from within the different RWE companies and countries.

Out of the numerous candidates, it was Volker Sporr and Klaus Fetzer from RWE IT who, in the end, stood out and were awarded first prize for their cartoon. The runners-up were trainees from the Czech Republic with a photo contribution as well as Hungarian colleagues from Elmü-Emasz who had built a “diverse ship”. The painting by Elizabeth Winiarski should also be mentioned – even if it only made 4th place it still convinced the jury of maximum creativity. All winners will be invited to “have a chat” about Diversity together with RWE´s Chief Human Resources Officer Uwe Tigges.
