Benefits - Environmental

RWE npower renewables operates a portfolio of onshore and offshore wind farms, hydroelectric and, though RWE npower, co-firing biomass plant. Generating electricity from these natural fuels has huge benefits to the environment.

Clean

By using the power of nature – wind, water, biomass - renewable energy generates electricity cleanly. Where wind and hydro power, are harnessed, electricity can be generated without producing harmful pollutants or damaging gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Using co-firing biomass is also good for the environment as it replaces fossil fuels and is a carbon neutral. This means that it releases an equal amount of carbon dioxide when it is burnt, to that which it absorbed during its growing period. Burning fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil works on the same principle but fossil fuels act as a long term store for carbon and when we burn them, they releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that has been locked up for millions of years. By regularly releasing this stored carbon, we are significantly contributing towards the problems of climate change. By using biomass fuels instead of fossil fuels, we are helping to reduce the amount of stored carbon that is released and helping to combat climate change.

Abundant

Britain has some 40% of Europe's total wind resource and is well placed to reap the benefits of clean power offered by wind farms.

The UK also has some of the wettest places in Europe in the mountains of Scotland, Wales and Northern England, in addition to established rivers across the country, including the Thames. This provides us that provide good sites for hydroelectric power stations.
A variety of biomass fuels can be sourced from within the UK and also further afield. npower is working to establish a UK energy crops supply chain based close to its Didcot power station that is already co-firing biomass fuels. This involves working with farmers local to the power station and contracting them to grow coppiced willow to use as a biomass fuel.

Sustainable
