Protecting the environment

We run a number of initiatives which raise awareness of environmental issues and help protect local environments.

The National Trust partnership

We have a groundbreaking partnership with the National Trust, Europe’s largest conservation organisation. We supply them with renewable energy, work with them to offer their members a green energy tariff and make National Trust properties more energy efficient. Our employees also volunteer at their sites.

Conservation projects

We encourage our employees to volunteer their time, talents and knowledge to their local communities. Our conservation projects give them the chance to make a real difference to local projects.  In 2008, our employees gave a total of 3,000 hours of their time to local environmental projects.

Landfill Community Fund

We support many environmental projects near our sites through the Landfill Tax Community Fund.

Antarctica 2041

As part of our education and environment commitment, we’ve partnered with 2041, an organisation set up by Robert Swan, OBE to preserve Antarctica and help combat the effects of climate change. We have given our employees the rare opportunity to work with Robert and his team in Antarctica. We’ll be offering young adults the opportunity to accompany Robert on the 2010 Antarctic expedition, through our Future Leaders programme, a competition to find young people who are committed to learning about climate change and to discovering new solutions to tackle its effects.

Climate Cops

Our Climate Cops programme helps schools across the UK become greener and more sustainable. Above all, the programme is designed to show young people how they can take the lead and set a greener example at school and at home. Our employees also participate in our Climate Cops programme.
