Triton Knoll - The Proposal

Site LocationIn 2003 The Crown Estate and the Government opened a second tender round for offshore wind farm development sites within three selected 'Strategic Areas' around the coast of Great Britain. As a result of the Round 2 tender process, npower renewables was awarded the development rights to take forward a 1,200 megawatt (MW) wind farm called Triton Knoll.
Triton Knoll is within the Greater Wash Strategic Area and is located off the East coast of England, approximately 33 kilometres off the coast of Lincolnshire and 46km from coast of North Norfolk. npower renewables is now progressing the development of the wind farm and is carrying out an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the site.
Jacob Hain, Triton Knoll Development Manager at npower renewables said: "If constructed, Triton Knoll Wind Farm will make an important contribution to the Government's aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and increasing the amount of electricity generated from renewable sources.
"However, there are many issues to be taken into account when developing an offshore wind farm of this scale. An assessment of marine ecology, cultural heritage, aviation, shipping and fisheries will all be undertaken throughout the coming year to ensure a well designed project is submitted into the planning system.
"We have submitted a Scoping Report which outlines the studies we will undertake as part of the offshore Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This report has given statutory consultees and interested parties the opportunity to comment on the approaches we propose to take and ensure a comprehensive EIA is conducted.
"Consultation will also be undertaken for the studies associated with the onshore works, which would be needed to connect the offshore wind farm to the electricity grid."
The final Environmental Statement (which will be produced from the EIA) will form part of the planning applications which npower renewables will submit once all of the studies are complete.
In parallel to the submission of the offshore Scoping Report we have already initiated the consultation process for with a number of key consultees and this will continue throughout the development process. This includes liaising with fisheries organisations and you can contact our Fisheries Liaison Officer through the 'Contact Us' link."
