Local Community
To find out more about our work with communities visit our Community webpages.
RWE npower renewables offers a range of community benefit packages at our operating onshore and offshore wind farms, these usually benefit those communities living closest to the site.
There are a number of ways of designing and operating these packages which are negotiated locally to meet the specific needs of individual areas. Packages vary, depending on the size, type and geographical make up of local communities.
Community benefit packages have been used to fund a wide variety of activities including community building refurbishments, environmental education programmes, energy efficiency schemes and supporting local groups and organisations.
Carno Onshore Wind Farm
Community Benefit Fund
In association with Carno Wind Farm, a community fund has been set up to assist local community projects in Carno, Trefeglwys and Llanbrynmair. The annual fund started at a base level of £19,500, it is index linked each year in line with inflation and will be available throughout the operational life of the wind farm.
Local decisions
The Carno Wind Farm Community Fund is administered by Carno, Trefeglwys and Llanbrynmair Community Councils, this means that decisions about how the fund is allocated are made by local representatives for the benefit of their own community. In addition a small fund is administered by The Community Foundation in Wales.
Support for the area
In 2008 39 grants were awarded totalling £31,523, and included:
- Canolfan Gymdeithasol (Carno Community Centre) - £6,000 towards the purchase of a wood pellet boiler.
- Eight Carno residents received grants of £500 to take part in academic or vocational courses including Certificate in tree surgery, NVQ level 3 in childcare and NVQ level 3 teaching assistant
- Llanbrynmair Community Centre - £1,500 towards electrical re-wiring
- Llanbrynmair Brownies and Guides - £500 towards equipment
- Friends of Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon - £900 towards computer equipment
Local Environmental Benefits
Every year, £9,000 is contributed from the Carno Wind Farm revenue to finance a land management project. This project has been supporting studies of wildlife and archaeology, and will develop a programme to improve the natural habitats. The land management scheme is administered by Powys County Council with assistance and advice from Countryside Council for Wales (CCW).
Local Economic Benefits
This £26 million development represents a significant investment in the Welsh rural economy with around a third of the total cost of the project being placed with Welsh contractors or suppliers.
