ABOUT RWE CONSULTING
1. Which consultancy fields does RWE Consulting cover?
Our sphere of activity is the future-proof energy market. Our consultancy projects and themes cover the full spectrum of the energy sector. We focus in particular on our three core areas of strategy advice, energy industry consulting and implementation advice.
2. Does RWE Consulting handle international projects?
With RWE we are pursuing an international growth path. For this reason, two themes are right at the top of our agenda: advancing the RWE companies and tapping into new business fields. We are increasingly targeting the markets of the Netherlands and the UK as well as supporting the development of business in the Czech Republic and Poland within the growing energy market of Eastern Europe.
We provide consultancy services to clients throughout Europe and around the world. We have offices located in Essen, Berlin, Frankfurt and London/Swindon. The daily workplace of our staff is the location of our client.
3. How does RWE Consulting as an in-house company differ from other management consultancy firms?
RWE Consulting focuses on projects that address the many different issues facing top management of the RWE Group. Our consulting themes and methods are fundamentally similar to those of other management consultancy firms – but our understanding of the management consulting business is quite different. We develop and define project goals together with the client, addressing the objectives of the client and the Group in a host of different ways. For the client, the outcome of working with us must be a measurable improvement in the way it deals with a particular challenge. It is important that we create added value for our Group clients and subsidiary companies, and for the Group as a whole. Due to our many years of experience in the energy sector and the host of different projects we have handled for the Group, we are also totally familiar with the structure and processes of the Group and know all the key players. This leads to faster project success.
4. Is any specialised knowledge of the energy sector required for applicants to RWE Consulting?
Knowledge of the energy industry is an advantage but not a prerequisite for anyone wanting to join our team. You can bring your knowledge of different disciplines to bear on your project work with our clients. Strong procedural and methodical competence and highly developed personal skills are more important to us in our job applicants than any specialised knowledge of the energy industry. We explain the fundamentals of the energy industry at induction seminars for all new staff members joining our consulting team. More in-depth knowledge is then acquired by our consultants “on the job” and at further staff training seminars.
5. What requirements does an RWE consultant have to meet?
We are looking for generalists with consulting skills who are interested in the energy industry and in some cases can contribute knowledge on technical issues. In order to be able to provide the RWE Group with excellent advice, you will bring analytical thinking and methodical skills from your particular discipline. Your high degree of personal and social competence will also stand you in good stead.
APPLYING TO RWE CONSULTING
6. What options are there for joining RWE Consulting?
As a student, you have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with our day-to-day consulting work during a three-month practical and gain a first impression of the RWE Group.
As a graduate, you would join us at the Consultant level. From the very start, you would take partial responsibility for projects as a member of one of our consultant teams.
If you are already an experienced consultant, you may join us as a Senior Consultant or Managing Consultant. Depending on your professional experience and your energy industry expertise, you would take on further responsibility for working with our clients. As you gain experience in consulting at RWE you can become part of our management team and assume responsibility for your own customer account and internal management tasks.
7. What documentation is required for an application?
Your curriculum vitae should be informative and well structured. The key information and any special points of your career path must stand out clearly. A logical structure and systematic layout is particularly important in consulting work, so if you want to be able to impress your clients with your project strategies, you will first need to convince us of your suitability. If you have all your educational qualifications (university entrance or ‘Abitur’ certificate, academic transcripts of results, university degrees or doctorate certificates) plus work references from former employers, you can send your documentation to us online:
8. How far in advance should I apply?
We advise you to send your application in about 3 months before the date you would like to start.
APPLYING TO RWE CONSULTING
9. What steps are involved in the selection process?
The first step is for you to apply online via the career portal of the RWE Group. Our recruiting process for graduates starts with an analytic online test. After this the recruiting process is similar for all applicants: If your profile is interesting for us, we will hold a lengthy phone conversation with you so both sides can gain a personal impression of each other. If this proves positive, we will then invite you to take the next step of a one-day assessment center/ management audit. Using practical test cases, we compare your individual skill set with our requirements. If both are a good match, you are practically on the home strait. A successful appointment interview with a member of our management team will seal the deal. Then all that remains is for us to issue you with a very warm welcome to RWE Consulting.
The first days start with our onboarding programm, which is made for knowing the relevant processes within RWE and RWE Consulting. After theses days you know a lot of colleagues and you have good requirements to start at RWE Consulting.
OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS AT RWE CONSULTING
10. Is it possible to write a bachelor or master thesis at RWE Consulting?
In individual cases we offer the option of writing a bachelor or master thesis here. This is possible only in conjunction with an internship. You would first apply for an internship at RWE Consulting and can then complete your bachelor or master thesis based on your experiences in the RWE Group and your work on our consulting projects.
11. Does RWE Consulting also offer working student positions?
After completing an internship at RWE Consulting, it is possible in individual cases to be hired as a working student.

13. What support is provided to consultants when they begin working at RWE Consulting?
When you start your job you will take part in a 3-day onboarding in which you will learn all the relevant processes for consultants and in our organisation while getting to know up to 25 new colleagues. During your first month with RWE Consulting you will sit in on three different consulting projects for one week each, giving you an overview of the various projects taking place.
14. Where is the initial place of work for entry-level consultants in Germany?
Those joining the company usually start out at our Essen location. This ensures proximity to many Group companies and colleagues.
A CAREER WITH RWE CONSULTING
15. What career opportunities are there within RWE Consulting?
With us, your career will develop in a series of four steps. We give you responsibility from the very start. Even in your role as a Consultant, you will be assigned partial responsibility for projects. Via the stepping stones of Senior Consultant through to Managing Consultant, your degree of responsibility then continues to grow – and this includes both responsibility for our client projects within the Group as well as in-house responsibility for improving the performance of RWE Consulting. Finally, as a Business Partner, you then take on an executive management role within our consultancy.
We measure the success of a project on the success of our clients. You determine the pace of your own career through your professional skills, your personal commitment and your team working ability. This is why there is no “minimum term” for the four levels of responsibility.
16. What opportunities does RWE Consulting offer following a career as a consultant?
Following a career as a consultant with RWE Consulting, you also have the option of applying for departmental or leadership responsibilities within the RWE Group. Irrespective of their current level of seniority, we support applications by our consultants for leadership roles within the Group. As former consultants, you remain part of our network and benefit from networking exchanging ideas with fellow colleagues at our alumni events.
