RWE Dea AG has laid the foundations for remediation of the benzene contamination at Völkersen and is now implementing the measures in a targeted manner. Work commenced with the remediation of the first section east of the Holtebüttel operating site. In this area, high benzene concentrations were measured in the wake of the extensive measurement campaign (over 2,500 measurements taken) along the former pipeline for the transportation of reservoir water. Initially a partial section of the reservoir water pipelines 952 and 954 had been completely removed.more

Today, RWE Dea begins implementing the measures to remediate the benzene contamination near Völkersen. The responsible authorities, working in consultation with district and the municipal authorities, had previously issued the approval for the first stage of the remediation measures. Over an initial section measuring 100 metres in length, the reservoir water pipelines 952 and 954 (east of the Holtebüttel operations site) will be dismantled and removed completely. Immediately afterwards, rehabilitation of the polluted groundwater near the surface will begin, using the tried and tested air sparging method.more
