Hameldon Hill extension
The proposal
RWE npower renewables is delighted to be increasing its renewable energy output in Lancashire after plans to extend Hameldon Hill Wind Farm were given the green light.
The application was approved by Burnley Borough Council in December 2010 for an additional three turbines to its existing wind farm, south west of Burnley.
Steve Milburn, Development Manager for RWE npower renewables, said: “We are very pleased with this decision. Hameldon Hill Wind Farm has been operational since 2007 and we are looking forward to increasing the clean electricity produced there with this extension.”
The three new turbines will have an installed capacity of between 6-7.5 megawatts (MW), bringing the combined output to a maximum of 12MW. When fully operational with the existing scheme it could supply the average annual domestic electricity needs of around 6,800 homes.1
Construction is due to start 2012 and the extension is expected to begin operation in 2013.
Site statistics
| Number of wind turbines | 3 |
| Height to blade tip (highest part of the turbine) | 110 metres |
| Additional installed capacity of project | Between 6.0 and 7.5 megawatts |
| Number of average homes supplied annually equivalent to project generation | Around 3,8001 homes each year |
1Energy predicted to be generated by the proposal is derived using wind speeds monitored in the local area, longer term Met. Office data and information from the nearby operating Hameldon Wind Farm. This enables a calculation to be made to estimate the average annual energy production for the site based on 3 turbines each of rated capacity 2 MW. The energy capture predicted and hence derived homes equivalent or emissions savings figures may change as further data are gathered.
Equivalent homes supplied is based on an annual electricity consumption per home of 4700 kWh. This figure is supported by recent domestic electricity consumption data available from The Digest of UK Energy Statistics and household estimates and projections from the UK Statistics Authority.
