Strategy
Greenhouse-gas emissions (GHGs) and their effects are no respecters of national borders or continental barriers. For this reason RWE’s Climate Protection team are active both in European locations and in international CDM/JI projects. Both efforts are key ingredients in our climate protection strategy.
Thanks to the scale and structure of its power-generation capacity, RWE is one of the biggest buyers of emission credits in Europe and worldwide. The Group has been committed to international climate protection projects since 1999, and is now active in all important CDM/JI countries. RWE is in the Top 10 list of companies operating on the global market for emission credits.
RWE will collaborate in all project types, regardless of region, provided that the projects fulfil the criteria of the Marrakech Accord and the EU Linking Directive. For the purchase of emission allowances, RWE offers a standard contract which is based on the IETA specimen text for an emission-reduction purchase agreement (ERPA) and with which we are prepared to assume project risks. In addition, we offer flexible price models that enable us to respond with tailor-made solutions to the ideas of our project partners. Besides the purchase of emission allowances, we act as entrepreneurs and finance or directly participate in projects or project companies.
We offer plant operators and project developers our competence and experience in the technical implementation and management of CDM or JI projects, and our support during the entire process. This includes producing the Project Design Document (PDD), obtaining the consent of the host country as well as monitoring the emission reductions.
Our team has long years of experience in the assessment of CDM and JI projects, knows the inherent risks and how to manage them. Thanks to our broad portfolio of energy-related activities, the Climate Protection Team can call upon a wealth of comprehensive engineering and project-management expertise from within the whole RWE group.
