Methane avoidance

We are participating in activities to avoid coal-mine-methane (CMM) and landfill-gas emissions. In these projects, methane, a potent greenhouse gas (21 times more harmful than CO2), from CMM or landfill gases is either used to produce electricity and heat or converted into the less detrimental CO2 by flaring.

In coal mine methane, we benefit from the experience of our subsidiary Mingas-Power, the biggest electricity producer in this area in Europe.

In China, these types of projects are performed by RWE Climate Protection China. Within the scope of CDM projects, plants with a capacity of 30 MW are being developed or are in operation. Further expansion is planned.

On the basis of this experience, we offer a wealth of know-how in the production and use of coal mine methane to implement CDM/JI projects. In addition, we are making a contribution to technology transfer. Without the components CDM and JI, CMM projects would not be economically feasible.
