Competence fields
RWE offers wide-ranging technological expertise in the most important GHG-avoidance methods. These are a crucial success factor in implementing CDM and JI projects. In this respect, we are able to benefit from the experience of the entire Group.

RWE Power, acting along with the Austrian company Carbon Projektentwicklung, manages the Carbon Climate Protection joint venture. Here, we develop, finance and operate CDM/JI project activities in which nitrous oxide (N2O, laughing gas) in the waste-gas stream of nitric-acid plants is catalytically degraded.

We are participating in activities to avoid coal-mine-methane (CMM) and landfill-gas emissions. In these projects, methane, a potent greenhouse gas (21 times more harmful than CO2), from CMM or landfill gases is either used to produce electricity and heat or converted into the less detrimental CO2 by flaring.

Energy-efficiency projects in households in CDM and JI regions combine climate protection targets and an improvement to the quality of life, especially in developing countries. Such projects are particularly sustainable, since they contribute to a permanent and environmentally-friendly change in consumer behaviour.

The efficient use of primary energy in the power-generation process makes a decisive contribution toward lowering CO2 emissions and is a key issue in our power-plant fleet. In CDM/JI projects designed to increase energy efficiency in power plants and reduce CO2 emissions, we offer our extensive know-how in the construction and operation of power stations of every type.

We participate in projects to enable existing electricity- and heat-producing systems to switch from carbon-intensive fuels to low-carbon fuels and from fossil torenewableenergy sources (e.g. biomass).

In our current CDM/JI portfolio, renewable projects are an important part. Our focus is on hydropower, wind and biomass. Here, we are benefiting from the experience acquired by the Group, which has taken the competencies and power plants in the area of renewables and bundled these in RWE Innogy.

RWE has had experience in the implementation of its own CDM/JI projects since 1999. To date, the Group has been engaged in more than 125 projects and has registered 45 with the UNFCCC. Many more projects have already been submitted for registration or are in an advanced phase of validation.
