History of Staythorpe

RWE npower, and its predecessor National Power, have been involved in generating power at Staythorpe for over half a century.  Over the years we have delivered significant investment into the local economy and provided support for many community projects.  We intend to continue working with the local community and are committed to being a good neighbour.

The first power station was built at Staythorpe immediately after the Second World War.  However, demand for electricity was growing fast, with more power stations needed to ensure continuity of supply to homes and industrial users, so the second Staythorpe Power Station was opened in 1962.  The first station was demolished in 1989 and the second in 1997.

In 1993, following full public consultation and a public inquiry, planning approval was granted for a gas-fired power station at Staythorpe.  Construction began in 1998 but was put on hold two years later, as there was already sufficient generating capacity in the UK at that time.

The new 1,650MW CCGT station at Staythorpe means that the site will once again play a crucial role in UK power generation and the economic success of the area well into the 21st century.
