Pembroke - local community
RWE npower has a long-term commitment to Pembroke and the surrounding area. Through links with local authorities, environmental groups and educational establishments, the new power station will continue to play an important role in the community.
For example, RWE npower and Pembrokeshire County Council have been working together with local schools on npower’s Climate Cops programme. This initiative helps pupils at schools in the area learn how to become greener and use energy more efficiently.
RWE npower will continue to fund, sponsor and support local initiatives. During the initial planning phase we contributed to a number of community events including sponsorship of the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock festivals, and we provided funding for the Foundry House Community Centre project. These examples of community support demonstrate the way in which we can play an active role in the local area and we welcome further enquiries from community groups and organisations who would like to discuss opportunities for RWE npower to get involved with their projects.
In addition, a Local Liaison Committee (LLC) has been formed to enable local community representatives to meet with the project team and discuss the development of the power station. The LLC meets quarterly and is attended by representatives of the County Council and a number of local Town and Community Councils.
The construction of a new power station is a major project, but every effort is being made to keep disruption to a minimum. Construction traffic is using agreed routes and is being controlled in order to limit impact on local roads. Local roads are also being improved by Pembrokeshire County Council’s Highways Department thanks to funding provided by RWE npower. This work will improve safety and help the roads accommodate the additional traffic required for the power station’s construction.
A new power station is a major, long-term investment that will represent a significant economic contribution to the local area. For example, the construction and operation of Pembroke Power Station creates around 1,500 jobs during the construction phase and a further 80 – 90 jobs when it is fully operational.
The power station is a significant investment, costing around £1 billion to construct and it is estimated its operation will bring a long-term benefit to the local economy of around £10 million each year.
