Safety

The safety, health and security of the public and our employees at all of our sites is our top priority. In seeking to develop new nuclear power stations in the UK, we would be bringing our considerable experience and understanding to bear.

RWE currently operates a total of five nuclear reactors located across three sites in Germany. Together our nuclear plant generates 25 per cent of the annual power produced by our German power station fleet. We have more than 45 years’ experience of all aspects of nuclear plant operation, waste management and decommissioning.

Our nuclear stations have served as reference plants for national research and development projects in Germany, including research into best practice in the management of safety and risk. The company's record in nuclear operations is recognised world-wide and RWE is an active member of a number of international associations working to improve and enhance the nuclear generation industry.

The nuclear industry in the UK is very closely regulated by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) which will ensure all nuclear plants are built and operated to the highest safety levels. Alongside the NII, the Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency ensure radioactive waste discharges and other environmental impacts are correctly managed. The Office for Civil Nuclear Security (OCNS) is the security regulator for the UK’s civil nuclear industry.

These rigorous processes mean nuclear installations have an exemplary safety record. Nuclear power stations have the structural resilience to withstand safely extreme conditions, including fire and earthquakes. The transport of radioactive material has been safely and securely carried out in the UK and around the world for many years.
