Transparency Initiative EITI

Dialogue with our stakeholders is based on transparency in our business activities.
This does not only concern economic, ecological and social issues facing the operations of our plants, but also the extraction of gas, oil and coal. For reason,
RWE became the first DAX company to join the international “Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative” (EITI) in April 2010.

The initiative EITI aims to create transparency over payments made to governments in connection with oil and gas extraction. It is designed to strengthen civil society and improve the local population’s share of revenue derived from the extraction of natural resources in a particular country. The initiative has the support of the European Union, the United Nations, the European Investment Bank and the World Bank, as well as NGOs like Transparency International, Oxfam and Caritas. The EITI came into being in the year 2002 on the instigation of Peter Eigen, the founder of Transparency International.

By joining the initiative, the RWE Group is committing itself to publicly disclose any future payments it makes to governments that are members of the EITI. RWE is the first DAX-listed company committed to the EITI’s criteria and principles and joins other leading international oil, gas and mining corporations such as Total, Shell, BP and Arcelor Mittal in the worldwide implementation of EITI’s principles of transparency.
