Development and Capabilities

npower cogen built, owned and operated the £38 million CHP scheme serving Dow Corning.  It comprises 28MW of gas and steam turbine generation with multiple high pressure waste heat recovery boilers and low pressure boilers, providing a total of 250 tonnes per hour of steam capacity.  In addition three water treatment streams provide boiler feed water and process water to Dow Corning.  The CHP plant has an overall efficiency of around 85% and the heat and electrical efficiencies achieved qualify as ‘good quality CHP’ under the CHP Quality Assurance Programme.

Benefits to Dow Corning

The schemes fuel efficiency and the contract terms resulted in Dow Corning making significant savings to their energy costs without any need for capital expenditure. They also benefit from npower cogen’s flexible approach to renegotiation when circumstances have changed.  In addition, by investing in CHP technology Dow Corning are reducing their carbon emissions and therefore demonstrating their commitment to reducing their impact on the environment.

In 2013 after 15 years of successful operation, Dow Corning acquired the CHP and it continues in operation sustaining the benefits to the processing site.
