Safety and environmental protection

We have a commitment to act with the utmost responsibility for humankind and environment. For this reason, occupational health and safety are given top priority at RWE Dea. We organise occupational health and safety days several times a year. A cornerstone of our policy are instructions for employees provided by managerial staff, safety experts and occupational health personnel in relation to potential hazards and accidents in the workplace.

Environmental protection is also a major concern for us. In conducting our activities, we are continually searching for solutions capable of minimising any emissions that may be harmful to the environment, and that can reduce the volume of waste, noise emissions as well as energy and resource consumption. We commission and conduct comprehensive environmental impact studies in the lead-up to all our projects in order to assess their potential impact and to minimise their effect on flora and fauna. By working in close consultation with the relevant approval authorities, we can successfully accommodate economic considerations and ecological concerns even in sensitive environments.

Community involvement

Volunteering for a good cause: The RWE Group supports employees who take respon-sibility for issues arising in their community. The initiative “RWE Companius” was launched for this very purpose. The initiative takes a unbureaucratic approach towards sponsoring non-for-profit projects in education, social welfare, sports, culture, energy, environmental protection and nature conservation. The only condition is that RWE employees are actively engaged in the relevant project. The range of projects sponsored by RWE Dea under this initiative to date ranges from providing equipment for schools in Hamburg right through to a car rally from the Allgäu region in Germany to Jordan to raise funds for Welthungerhilfe, an international food aid programme.

We have been providing assistance to socially disadvantaged people in the vicinity of our operations sites for many years now. By dispensing with gifts from the Company, RWE Dea employees and pensioners support people in special need of assistance near our operating sites in Germany. We are also a socially active and committed partner for local communities at our locations in other countries. Examples here are our funding for a school for the blind in Libya and for elementary schools and for adult education in Egypt. We take care to ensure that our support goes to the most needy children and their schools. By improving their learning environment, we want to make a contribution towards better education and hence a better quality of life for Egyptian schoolchildren.

Our sponsorship of projects also extends into the realm of culture. For example, we have been offering scholarships to talented music students in Norway since the year 2000. The purpose of this music sponsorship programme is to make a contribution to the exchange of culture and knowledge between Norway and Germany.
