- Information and dialogue on oil production from the Mittelplate reservoir
- Series of lectures on energy topics scheduled to begin in April

Thomas Kainer, Head of the Holstein production facility, and Mr Gerd Dethlefs, Mayor of the community of Friedrichskoog, cut the red tape
Today (Wednesday), the Mittelplate consortium - consisting of RWE Dea AG as operator and its partner Wintershall Holding GmbH - opened the completely revamped Info-Point in Friedrichskoog’s mall Deichpassage. In the presence of the Mayor of the community of Friedrichskoog, Mr Gerd Dethlefs, as well as the Head of the Holstein production facility, Thomas Kainer, the red tape was symbolically cut in the presence of invited guests.
Focus on dialogue and interaction
The new Mittelplate Info-Point is designed to explain and illustrate the subject of oil production and enable visitors to experience it first-hand. Interested visitors can look forward to enlarged premises with new, interactive elements. “The Info-Point is an outstanding platform to provide insights into living and working on Mittelplate drilling and production island,” explained Mr. Kainer. The existing floor space was extended from 30 sqm previously to about 90 sqm, with enough room for presentations with immediate effect. Enhancing the technical standards represented one of the focal points of the redesign. Touchscreens, interactive games and multimedia partitions render Mittelplate capable of being experienced and are intended to address younger target groups in particular. For instance, by means of an interactive knowledge quiz, visitors can find out how much crude oil is part of key items used in every day life.
Series of presentations on the subject of crude oil production
In the last six years, about 16,500 persons visited the Info-Point in Koogstrasse 141. Again this year, from 29 March to 9 September, the Info-Point will be open Thursdays to Sundays from 14:00hrs to 17:00hrs. Geologist Günter Wangerin continues to give citizens, tourists and school classes detailed information on Germany’s biggest crude oil reservoir and its development. Moreover, a new series of lectures on the subjects of Mittelplate and crude oil production is scheduled to begin in April. Furthermore, employees of RWE Dea as well as external lecturers will be giving presentations on exciting energy issues at regular intervals in the future.

The Mittelplate reservoir
The year 1985 saw the start to the construction of the Mittelplate drilling and production island off the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, from which Germany’s biggest crude oil reservoir has been developed since 1987. Since the year 2000, oil has not only been produced offshore but also onshore, from the Dieksand Land Station near Friedrichskoog. 27 million barrels of crude oil have since been produced. A further 23 million mt in reserves are still considered to be commercially recoverable. Thanks to its high safety and environmental standards, the drilling and production island is considered a positive example for responsible oil production. Moreover, domestic oil production in Dithmarschen represents the basis for 1,000 jobs on Schleswig-Holstein's west coast.
