RWE involvement in the Ruhr and beyond

The Ruhr has undergone a transformation: the once mining district is now a modern urbanised region. RWE has been part of the process. During its history spanning more than a century, the Essen-based Rheinisch-Westfälischen Elektrizitätswerk has become one of Europe’s leading suppliers of energy - and the Ruhr region the 2010 European Capital of Culture.

RWE involvement in the culture, history and natural environment of the area – and not just during its year as Capital of Culture - is prompted by this essential link. For instance the company sponsors museums, facilities and initiatives that highlight what is special about the region while encouraging a responsible approach to the environment and natural resources.

Its main focus is the sponsorship of contemporary art. Through partnership – in particular with the Museum Folkwang - RWE has created numerous opportunities and venues for public exchange and encounter. At both the company headquarters in Essen and in the RWE Tower in Dortmund regular exhibitions are held that feature the work of young artists and famous names of the international art scene alike. And RWE also sponsors cultural projects abroad, such as the RWE Music Foundation in Norway and the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

Thanks to the scope of its involvement RWE provides stimuli in the Ruhr and beyond. After all, culture is electrifying - it encourages reflection, casts our world in a new light, and brings people together. For a lasting impact on the region.
