Storage facilities in Bavaria

RWE Dea is not only involved in the exploration and production of natural gas, it also stores the gas in underground storage facilities. This helps offset seasonal fluctuations in demand. Gas is stored there in summer when demand is low and fed into the supply grid at peak periods in winter when demand would otherwise exceed supply.

To meet Germany's domestic demand, natural gas is imported from Russia, the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark. With a combined storage volume of just under 1.9 billion m³, the RWE Dea gas storage facilities in Wolfersberg (south-east of Munich), Inzenham-West (near Rosenheim) and Breitbrunn/Eggstätt (on Chiemsee) play a key role in supplying gas to Upper Bavaria. They mainly store Russian gas.

The RWE Dea gas storage facilities are all depleted gas reservoirs where gas accumulated millions of years ago. Thus, they are particularly suitable for storing large quantities of natural gas today. The fact that natural gas accumulated in these reservoirs proves that the layers of rock above the reservoir safely seal off these porous storage rock beds. RWE Dea has many years of experience in underground gas storage. Wolfersberg has been in operation since 1973, Inzenham-West since 1982 and Breitbrunn/Eggstätt since 1996.
