Libya

In Libya, one of the key regions of RWE Dea’s upstream business, the company has been operating since June 2003. RWE Dea’s licence acreage in Libya covers a total of more than 40,000 square kilometers over seven concessions combined, which have been awarded to the company by the Libyan National Oil Corporation in May 2003 and January 2008, respectively. RWE Dea is the Operator with a 100% participation interest in these concessions.

The licenses are located in the Sirte basin (3 blocks), in the Cyrenaica basin (3 blocks) and in the Kufra basin (1 Block).

The exploration program of RWE Dea in the Libyan Sirte basin, with five strikes to date, is highly successful. Five wells drilled struck oil in concession NC193 and two discoveries in concession NC195 are extending the strong position of RWE Dea in Libya.

Within the scope of the current drilling program, in the RWE Dea concessions the contents of reservoirs already discovered are being assessed and further interesting structures studied for oil and gas deposits. To this end, initially four drilling rigs will be deployed, with which at least seven further exploratory wells are to be drilled in concessions NC193, NC194, NC195 and NC197.

Concerning the new concession in the Cyrenaica plateau the work program comprises the acquisition of 4,600 kilometers of 2D seismic data and the drilling of two exploratory wells with a view to examining the gas potential in the area.

The project in Libya will strengthen RWE Dea’s position in North Africa by effectively complementing its successful operations in Egypt and the start-up of activities in Algeria in July 2002.
