Our dedicated biofuels desk, Global Green Commodities, is active globally across a range of fuels – predominantly wood pellets but also woodchips and agricultural by-products – and are responsible for the short-term and long-term international supply of all biofuels to the RWE Group. We also work with a wide and varied base of third-party customers around the world.

Our size is a factor: as a major trading house, we reap economies of scale across our biofuels business and deploy these to the benefit of our customers.

Sourcing sustainably

Using biofuels only makes sense if they are sustainably sourced. We are constantly increasing the number of our suppliers that are Green Gold Label certified, and adhere to the Code of Conduct of the RWE Group. We are signatories to the UN Global Compact – a policy initiative for businesses committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Driving innovation

Innovation is key to the rapidly evolving biofuels market. We consider ourselves leaders in the field – striving to develop new opportunities for the RWE Group and our third-party customers.

Through the RWE Group, we’ve taken a 25% equity stake in Topell, a Dutch start-up developing a groundbreaking process for producing biocoal pellets for co-firing. When complete, this will be the first commercial biocoal facility in the Netherlands.

RWE has also built the biggest and most modern biomass pellet factory in the US state of Georgia. The plant has gone online in 2011 and will have an annual production capacity of 750,000 tonnes of pellets to be used in pure biomass power plants as well as for the co-firing of coal and biomass. Global Green Commodities markets the pellets and manages sales to third-party customers.

Engineering excellence

Our engineers are among the most experienced in the business. Global Green Commodities works closely with technical counterparts to develop both upstream and downstream projects that make technical and financial sense over the long-term. Naturally, we offer this combination of engineering and fuel risk management expertise to our customers.

We recognise that solid and longstanding relationships are vital to initiating and sustaining economically viable biofuel projects. We have established just such relationships with producers from around the world – some of whom have been supplying us with biofuels for many years. Not only do we develop high quality, sustainably produced biofuel inputs – we can guarantee a consistent supply – a critical factor in enabling generators to make financially effective long-term investment plans.
