Since as early as 1906 RWE has been harnessing hydropower and giving a significant boost to its further development. RWE operates 44 run-of-river plants with a capacity of some 280 megawatts for its sister company RWE Innogy. These power plants generate about 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year – this is equivalent to the annual power demand of some 300,000 households. With a capacity of 153 megawatts, our Herdecke pumped-storage plant (Ruhr river) contributes to covering peak load demand and is used to provide grid services. Moreover, we are using some 2,400 MW in hydropower stations (above all in pumped-storage plants) owned by our subsidiaries and RWE Innogy to cover load requirements.
