Germany's pipeline network which is used for the transport of natural gas, for instance, already covers a length of approximately 40,000 km today. Hence, the technology employed for installing and operating the climate protection pipeline has proven itself over many decades – for the good of man and the environment. With minimum external impact and undisturbed operation, pipelines are the most reliable transport option which is least susceptible to failures.
„Intelligent pigs“ regularly inspect the pipeline

The safety of man and the environment will have top priority for RWE Dea when building the planned pipeline route from the Goldenberg power plant to the reservoir site: The route will avoid earthquake zones and be situated at an adequate distance to residential areas. Moreover, the material which has already been successfully used in pipeline projects in the USA is deformable.

This high capacity of deformation will additionally protect the pipeline from mechanical damage. Thus, for instance, negligent construction cannot cause any harm. Naturally, the pipeline will be monitored  and checked on a regular basis. Independent experts such as the German Technical Control Association, TÜV, are involved right from the beginning of the planning through to commissioning and beyond. Moreover, so-called "intelligent pigs" will regularly inspect the pipeline on the inside. Small block-valve stations installed above ground serve to interrupt the transportation of CO₂, if necessary.
