Energy & Climate

“More growth, less carbon” – that, in a nutshell, is our strategic agenda 2012. Our aim, in other words, is to grow profitably and to reduce our carbon emissions and it is in pursuit of these twin goals that we have initiated the largest investment programme in our history.

We are well aware of the responsibility we bear for protecting the climate as best we can. We therefore intend to cut our carbon emissions by 16 percent by 2012 and by 34 percent by 2015 (compared with the RWE Group’s 2008 emissions of 172 million tonnes). We will do this by making our power plants more efficient, by developing low-carbon forms of power generation, by investing heavily in renewables and by taking part in international climate protection projects.

Climate protection

No matter when, no matter where – every private individual and every company wants electricity and warmth. And this is what RWE provides – by maintaining a diversified generation portfolio and by investing heavily in the expansion and modernisation of its power plants and grids.

Security of supply

Research and development are crucial to the success of our pursuit of an environmentally responsible and safe energy supply. We therefore intend to spend more than one billion euros on research and development between 2008 and 2013, most of it on projects aimed at lowering carbon emissions.

Innovation

Environmentally responsible conduct is essential not just to winning broad public acceptance for what we do, but also to obtaining operating licences for our power plants, grids and facilities.
