Battery storage systems are an essential component of the energy transition because they store energy during an overproduction of electricity in the grid and then release it again when it is needed. RWE is currently operating battery storage projects with an installed capacity of around 150 MW, as well as realising worldwide battery storage projects with a total output of more than 800 MW. The large-scale 220 MW project in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was officially presented in November 2022, is to break new ground for the use of storage technologies at RWE’s power plant fleet in Germany. A total of 690 blocks of lithium-ion batteries are to be installed at sites in Neurath and Hamm. By opting for the sites of its existing power plants, RWE is able to take advantage of the synergy of combined technologies. The prefabricated batteries can be installed in cabinet form, utilising surfaces that are already available, and can be connected to existing grid infrastructure.

The planned system reacts within seconds and can provide its power over the duration of one hour. Thereby the system contributes to the stabilisation of the grid and to a reliable power supply. The new battery storage is virtually networked with RWE's German power plants. This allows an optimised control of when which power plant provides balancing energy.
RWE benefits from its many years of expertise in the field of energy storage - project planning, modeling, system integration and commissioning of the project are all handled by RWE autonomously. The group-wide joint project is a successful example of structural change. With this project, traditional power plant locations can contribute to the German and European energy supply with an innovative network.

Key figures for the battery storage project in Hamm and Neurath
planned construction start
In Neurath, batteries with a total output of 80 MW are to be installed on an area of around 7000 m2, which is roughly equivalent to the size of a football field. And in Hamm, batteries with a total output of 140 MW are to be installed at the Westfalen power plant over a surface area of 14,000 m2. The project plans to use the latest lith-ium-ion batteries, which are supplied as prefabricated components that can be in-stalled in cabinet form.
The total investment amounts to around 140 million euros. Construction is sched-uled to start in 2023, subject to the pending building permit, while commissioning has been planned for 2024. RWE aims to build an overall three gigawatts of battery storage systems by 2030.
