Welcome to the age of hydrogen

Project development for a growing future market

RWE is actively involved in the development of innovative hydrogen projects. The H2 molecule is considered to be an important future building block of a successful energy transition. RWE is a partner in over 30 H2 projects and is working on solutions for decarbonising the industry with associations and corporations like Shell, BASF and OGE. Hydrogen projects are comprehensively supported in the separate Hydrogen department of the subsidiary RWE Generation.

Hydrogen technologies with potential

A number of demonstration and testing facilities are under construction or operational at sites in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany. GetH2 in Lingen is the German flagship of the hydrogen strategy. This is where RWE has given the green light for the development of a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure by constructing a 100 MW electrolysis plant, which involves 40 partners working together. In the United Kingdom, RWE is committed to Pembroke, where a new centre of excellence for hydrogen is commencing operations at the gas-fired power plant of the same name. The major project NorthH2 on the North Sea coast of the Netherlands aims to use one gigawatt of installed offshore wind energy for green hydrogen production by 2027.

Together with strong partners, RWE is currently pressing ahead with around 30 green hydrogen projects –some of which are pioneering. The energy group’s broad positioning along the entire value chain offers the perfect conditions for the development of a functioning hydrogen infrastructure – in onshore and offshore wind power, in the development of green hydrogen production plants and through the operation of large gas-fired power plants.

RWE has considerable expertise and experience in the development of hydrogen projects throughout Europe. Find out more here.

Offshore-to-X

BASF and RWE want to cooperate on new technologies for climate protection. The declaration of intent of both companies focuses on a CO2-neutral chemical industry and green hydrogen. Green electricity and innovative production technology could transform the Ludwigshafen chemical site into a lighthouse project for climate protection in chemical industry. From 2030, an additional offshore wind farm with a capacity of 2 gigawatt is to provide BASF green electricity for CO2-free production processes.
