On the shoreline of the planned Hambach opencast mining lake, RWE is realising a photovoltaic plant with an integrated battery storage system as well as another ground-mounted photovoltaic plant. It will take many years for the lake to reach its final level, during which time the land can be temporarily used for the two large solar farms.
“RWE Neuland Solar Farm” photovoltaic plant with integrated battery storage
The solar plant provides 12 MW of electricity at its peak. The connected battery storage is configured for a two-hour charging and supply cycle of 4.1 MW. It thus acts as a buffer between solar power generation and the grid, enabling power feed-in to be even better matched to demand.
RWE was awarded the “RWE Neuland Solar Farm” project, the fourth of its kind in the Rhenish region, in the innovation tender held by the German Federal Network Agency in 2022. The battery storage facility is in the commissioning phase and the solar plant is already producing green electricity.
