Our current industrial and service-sector society has many lifelines: data networks, mobility, competitive industries and building infrastructure. The one thing these all have in common is the need for electricity – the key energy of our time. The more digitalisation and electrification progresses, the greater the need for secure, 24/7 supply. Our company faces the huge challenge of meeting the burgeoning demand for power while at the same time mitigating against climate change. RWE produces that much-needed electricity – clean and safe. We are investing heavily in the expansion of renewables and storage technologies. With our flexible power plant fleet, we underpin the nation’s security of supply. Our goal is clear: to be carbon-neutral by 2040.
The RWE Group is a world leader in renewables with a clear growth focus. RWE keeps its finger firmly on the pulse and is proactively driving change towards the age of renewables. Change is part of the history of RWE. It is also the prerequisite to future-proofing our company. RWE leverages innovation and investment as the basis for a carbon-neutral future.
RWE Renewables, the youngest subsidiary of the RWE Group, is one of the world leaders in renewables. The company, which is subdivided into two functional units “RWE Renewables Europe & Australia” and “RWE Offshore Wind” in addition to RWE Renewables Americas, has around 3,500 employees. RWE Renewables is driving the expansion of renewables in over 20 countries on five continents. The Americas, our core markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region are the key focus of RWE investment activity.
With its power plants in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, the approximately 3,000 employees of RWE Generation produce electricity primarily from gas, hydropower and biomass. The company ranks second in Europe with its gas-fired power plants. The RWE Group bundles its hydrogen activities in RWE Generation. RWE is driving forward more than 30 projects in the field of hydrogen with partners from industry and science.
RWE Power AG, Essen/Cologne, with a workforce of 10,000 employees, is responsible within the Group for power production from lignite and nuclear energy. In the Rhineland region, it operates three open-cast lignite mines, with production there dedicated primarily to electricity generation from its own power plants. Some lignite is also refined to produce solid fuel and filter materials. In addition, the company is responsible for post-operational and dismantling work on the RWE nuclear plants. Power plants in this business segment currently contribute a total of around 9 gigawatts to the grid.
RWE Supply & Trading is the interface between RWE and the energy markets around the world. Approximately 1,700 employees from over 50 different countries trade (renewable) electricity, (green) gas, commodities and CO2 emission allowances. Accurate market analyses and a high degree of customer centricity enable them to create innovative energy supply solutions as well as risk management concepts for industrial operations. The trading entity also ensures the commercial optimisation of RWE’s power plant dispatch and markets electricity from renewables. In addition, there are the legally independent RWE gas storage companies in Germany and Czech Republic under the umbrella of RWE Supply & Trading.
Decarbonisation and sustainability are key components of our corporate strategy - with a clear objective: we aim to be climate-neutral by 2040.
