On 22 June, RWE CFO Dr. Markus Krebber discussed with guests from business and science how the ambitious targets for expanding renewables in Europe and Germany can be achieved. The panel was chaired by Klaus Schäfer, CTO Covestro, Christoph Maurer, Managing Director of Consentec GmbH, Felix Matthes, Research Co-ordinator at the Öko-Institut e.V., and Patrick Graichen, Director of Agora Energiewende - all experts in their respective fields. The discussion focused on the expansion of renewables in Europe in the context of the European Green Deal and the European Recovery Fund. The guests emphasised that investments in renewables can make a sustainable contribution to the recovery of the European economy.
With regard to the expansion of renewables in Germany, the debate revolved primarily around the most sensible tendering regime for offshore expansion. Politicians are currently discussing the right way forward in the context of the new offshore wind energy law.
Please take the opportunity to watch the recording of the RWE talk – we apologise for the technical problems, including the translation into English, in the first few minutes.
One of the main topics of the RWE talks was the question of how the expansion of wind power at sea can be carried out safely and at the lowest possible cost for the energy consumer, measured against the targets. A current study by enervis researchers on "Promotion and Tender Design for Offshore Wind" can be found here (in German).
Here are the main results of the study:
The symmetrical market premium offers clear advantages over the proposal of the Federal Ministry of Economics, especially since the
- the costs will be 4 to 8 billion lower
- and the expansion targets can be reached more reliably.
