RWE completes sale of shares in Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm
09.10.2026

RWE and Borussia Dortmund officially commissioned the new battery storage system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK today during the Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt. This marks the completion of the two partners’ joint energy concept for the stadium. Following the installation of the photovoltaic system on the roof of the BVB FanWelt and the completion of the world’s most powerful photovoltaic system on a stadium roof, the battery storage system has also become operational.
The battery storage system has a capacity of 3.7 megawatts and can supply this output for just over an hour. The photovoltaic system, which was commissioned in December 2025, comprises 11,132 solar modules and has a capacity of more than 5 megawatts (MWp). By linking the battery to the new PV system, the electricity generated can be used even when the sun is not shining. With the new photovoltaic system, BVB can meet up to 45 per cent of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK’s electricity requirements.
Dr Markus Krebber, Chief Executive of RWE AG: “With the commissioning of the battery storage system, the entire system comprising the photovoltaic plant and the battery at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now fully operational. Linking the two systems makes it possible to use the solar power generated on site even more flexibly, even when the sun isn’t shining. The experts from BVB and RWE have breathed life and energy into our partnership through this project. It provides a solid foundation for further joint developments.”
Carsten Cramer, Chairman of the Executive Board of Borussia Dortmund: “SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not only our iconic home, but also a central element of our holistic decarbonisation strategy. With the battery storage system, we are collaborating with RWE to complete a forward-looking energy concept that makes our solar power even more usable. We are delighted that our stadium will thus continue to stand for resource-efficient and innovative action in the future.”
As a “Premium Partner” and a key part of the “BVB Empowers” initiative, RWE will continue to support BVB in optimising the energy management of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK as part of the six-year partnership. The aim is to further increase the stadium’s contribution to security of supply, energy efficiency, and decarbonisation.
