RWE 'jacks-up' strategic vessel partnership with ZITON

RWE, one of the world’s leading renewables companies, can announce the successful completion and commissioning of its Camster II Onshore Wind Farm in Caithness, Scotland.
The 36 megawatts (MW) project was first consented in July 2021 and construction started in 2023. It first generated electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational with the capacity to power the equivalent of around 51,000 typical homes.

Camster II is RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in Caithness, adding to a growing cluster that delivers significant economies of scale and helps strengthen local job security. Principal contractor Farrans supported over 50 roles during the construction works, welcomed two early careers civil engineering students and an apprentice. The contractor also appointed 54% of all its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, including Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, and representing 56% of the total subcontract spend.
Camster II will now use locally based engineers and experts for operations and maintenance, further reinforcing local job security. While Farrans is continuing to work with RWE, this time supporting the construction of its Golticlay wind farm.

Our extensive portfolio in delivering onshore wind farms and our long history of operations in Scotland meant that we were well placed to be the main contractor for RWE, a client we have developed an excellent longstanding relationship with.”
RWE is also now shaping an innovative community benefits package for the Caithness region directly connected to Camster II, and with priorities being developed in consultation with local stakeholders. Details of the programme will be announced soon. Through Camster II, RWE’s total annual contribution to Caithness community funds will now exceed £580,000 and is likely to rise further as more RWE projects come online. To date, over £3.5 million has already been invested in both Caithness community initiatives and supporting individuals to access training and education.
Camster II is not only helping future-proof Scotland’s power supply by enhancing energy security with reliable, renewable generation, but is also delivering tangible environmental improvements. During construction, the trial of an experimental peat reinstatement method—reusing peat from turbine foundations for forestry reinstatement—earned recognition from Nature Scot and environmental groups. Furthermore, a core path to the east of the site was resurfaced and a new equestrian gate installed, improving access for recreational horse riders.
Camster II consists of 10 turbines and is one of four new RWE onshore wind farms in Scotland under construction and the first to be completed and commissioned. Together the four wind farms total up to 232 MW - Camster II at 36 MW (Caithness), Strathy Wood at 63 MW (Sutherland), Enoch Hill at 70 MW (East Ayrshire) and Golticlay at 62.7MW (Caithness).
