RWE in Greece

Welcome to RWE in Greece!

About RWE Renewables Hellas

RWE is a world leading company in the field of renewable energies. With our investment and growth strategy “Growing Green”, we are contributing significantly to the success of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the energy system around the globe.

In 2021, RWE entered the Greek renewables market and established its subsidiary RWE Renewables Hellas. With an experienced team based in Athens, the company is accelerating the energy transition in Greece. And we are constantly growing our local team.

Strong partnership in solar power

Greece is one of the sunniest countries in Europe and has ambitious growth plans for renewables.

Together with our Greek partner PPC Renewables, RWE formed the joint venture company, Meton Energy S.A. in 2021. 1.5GWp of new solar capacity are to be installed in Greece through the joint venture. The partnership is a collaboration on equal terms, where complementary strengths become a factor for success.

Solar projects: construction, commissioning and planned capacity

Together, RWE and PPC have already energised 9 solar projects (930 MWp in total, 884MWac), generating enough electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 400,000 Greek homes. These 9 solar projects are located in Western Macedonia in Northern Greece, within the boundaries of the former Amynteo opencast lignite mine. In addition, RWE and PPC are constructing two new solar projects in the administrative region of Central Macedonia in Northern Greece. Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar farms will have a total capacity of 567 MWp (518 MWac). When they are commissioned, annual generation is expected to be sufficient to meet the energy needs of more than 240,000 Greek households.

Strong renewables footprint with Offshore Wind

RWE plans to complement its strong renewables footprint with offshore wind projects in Greece. In partnership with HELLENiQ Energy the company aims to collaborate on the development, construction and operation of offshore wind farms off the Greek coast.

HELLENiQ Energy brings in extensive experience within the Greek energy sector and a commitment to expand its renewables portfolio. RWE contributes its extensive technical and commercial expertise from a track record of more than 20 years in offshore wind. This partnership is all the more significant in light of Greece’s current target of having 1.9 GW of offshore wind capacity in operation by 2030 for both fixed-bottom and floating projects.
