November 2021 – the eyes of the world are on Glasgow, host city of the 26th UN climate change conference (COP26). It is here that the future of our climate is being decided and all hopes are being pinned on the world leaders – their deliberations and decisions are set to make history.

We at RWE are also expectantly watching the Scottish city, and hoping that emissions will be cut further, net-zero ambitions will be increased, and a club of the willing will be formed. There will be green industrial growth promoted, solutions will be found focusing on people, and above all we are hoping for close global cooperation in order to work close together to ensure climate targets are met.

At RWE we are not waiting for others – we are acting right now.

RWE's Transformation

Goal: net zero

Net Zero drives our business and investments. RWE is a company undergoing transformation as well as forging the wider net zero energy transition.

Carbon neutral business

As one of the world’s leading renewable energy producers we are building a carbon neutral business and transforming our asset portfolio in response to the drive to net zero.

Net investment of 5 billion euros

Net zero requirements define and drive our future investment decisions. RWE aims to invest net 5 billion euros to grow our renewables portfolio to 13 GW 2020-2022.

For RWE’s part, as a company, we have a clear goal: to become net zero by 2040.

Last year we expanded this goal by extending our targets to all activities and emissions, setting a science-based target for 2030 covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

These company-specific targets were subject to a comprehensive review by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an independent initiative of the WWF, UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and CDP. Based on climate science, the SBTi has attested that RWE’s targets are in line with the Paris Agreement which aims to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius.

We are also proud to confirm that earlier this year and ahead of the COP26 summit, that RWE joined the headline UN ‘Race to Zero’ initiative based on our commitment to relevant Science-based Targets.
