  • Award recognises RWE’s progress in transforming towards a low-carbon energy business model
  • Clear commitment to phase-out coal by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2040, testified by the renowned Science Based Target initiative

RWE has been awarded the 2025 Energy Innovation Award by Energy Intelligence during this year’s Energy Intelligence Forum in London. The 2025 Energy Innovation Award recognises the company’s considerable achievement in driving the energy transition including its commitment to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2040. The company’s climate targets align with the 1.5-degree reduction pathway as set by the Paris Agreement, which was scientifically confirmed by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Michael Müller, CFO of RWE AG: “This award reflects the great commitment and dedication of the entire RWE team. It is thanks to their hard work that RWE continues to advance the energy transition. Our success is the result of our shared determination to create a climate-friendly, affordable, and secure energy system. We remain fully committed to our goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2040, and we are making steady progress.”

RWE’s growth strategy — driven by value-accretive investments and acquisitions — has made it a leading renewable energy company in Europe, the UK, and the US. Its integrated business model combines renewables with flexible, low-carbon power generation and global energy trading. The strong foundation positions RWE to meet the rising demand for electricity driven by electrification and artificial intelligence.

The Energy Innovation Award recognises companies making the most notable shifts toward a low-carbon energy business model, particularly energy incumbents or those aiding incumbents in the transition. It is rooted in quantitative data, as measured by Energy Intelligence’s Energy Transition and Competitive Intelligence services and Green Utilities ranking. The winner is then selected from a shortlist by an independent panel of leading experts in finance, government, academia, and consulting.
