RWE has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the discount supermarket Lidl GB. The five-year agreement, which has already begun, covers an annual electricity supply of 100 gigawatt hours (GWh). This accounts for just over 15% of Lidl GB’s national electricity requirements. The electricity will be generated by RWE’s Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm, which is located in the Irish Sea. Consisting of 160 wind turbines with a total capacity of 576 megawatts, the wind farm was commissioned in 2015.

RWE and Lidl are already working together in Germany

In spring 2023, the German retail divisions of Schwarz Group, Lidl and Kaufland, signed a long-term PPA with RWE. From 2028 until 2038, RWE will supply around 250 GWh of green electricity per year to the companies from its German Kaskasi offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Since establishing itself in Great Britain in 1994, Lidl GB has grown continuously and now employs over 35,000 people. It operates over 1,000 stores and 13 distribution centers in England, Scotland and Wales. As part of Schwarz Group, Lidl is one of Europe’s leading food retailers. The company currently operates around 12,600 stores and over 230 logistics centers and warehouses in 31 countries, employing more than 382,400 people worldwide.
