An unexpected opportunity
As an Application Developer in RWE's Market Data Team, Ryan is responsible for delivering vital data to RWEST analysts and traders, enabling crucial financial decisions. The opportunity to work in Singapore arose unexpectedly when his manager casually asked: "Would you consider relocating to Singapore?" Tasked with creating an independent Market Data Team for the APAC region, Ryan’s enthusiastic "Yes! Why not!?" marked the beginning of a transformative adventure. Although he didn't have much connection previously with the Singapore team – having only met a few times during offsite events – his adaptability, openness and experiences made him the ideal candidate for this assignment.
Professional growth, new skills, and learnings
In Singapore, Ryan was appointed with expanding and autonomising the local Market Data Team to function independently from Europe – essential for continuous support in the APAC region while Europe is asleep. This involved recruiting new team members, training them, and providing additional knowledge transfer to existing staff. Ryan enhanced his leadership skills, becoming more proactive and confident through direct engagement with colleagues and end users. "We faced the challenge of adjusting to the demands of a 24-hour trading environment, adapting to the fast-paced nature of this new environment taught me invaluable lessons about agility and focus in ever-changing conditions", said Ryan. Settling into his new role, Ryan focused on building relationships with local traders and data suppliers, facilitating smoother operations and aligning efforts with regional needs.
Navigating life in Singapore
Adjusting to life in Singapore came with its own set of challenges, starting with the tropical climate and logistical tasks like setting up his apartment. "Fortunately, the Global Mobility Team helped me in so many ways, from finding a flat and establishing an internet connection to opening a bank account. Sofia from the Global Mobility Hub provided invaluable support, particularly when I was without my card reader that is crucial for secure financial transactions between my UK and Singapore accounts, like for rent payments.", Ryan remembers. Additionally, an unexpected passport rejection during a trip back to the UK taught Ryan resilience and revealed the value of staying adaptable in the face of unexpected challenges.
Embracing the expat adventure
Together with some of his colleagues, Ryan co-founded the "Animal Farm Running Club", allowing him to enjoy sightseeing during lunchtime, have fun, and train for his first two marathons – an unforgettable highlight for him. This club not only marked fitness milestones but also fostered friendships, teamwork and a deeper connection to the local community.
“My journey in Singapore highlighted the rewards of embracing the unknown and adapting to new environments. It shifted my mindset to go with the flow more, and embrace everything that comes my way. I think for professional and for personal life it is good to stay open-minded and maintain a positive attitude.
